With the purpose of assessing the progress of the output, publications in cardiovascular medicine originating from Turkey's institutions were identified from the Web of Science. Articles in full-text appearing in source publications of Science Citation Index CD Edition alone were included while meeting abstracts and letters to the editor were excluded. A weighted credit system was utilized for items published jointly with a foreign or a noncardiological Turkish institution. In sum, 112 articles and reviews were identified which represented a slight increase by 9% over the previous year. Turkey's share of world output in cardiovascular publications, remained stable at 7.2 per mille. Cardiology, with 82 articles, was ahead of cardiovascular surgery with 18, and pediatric cardiology with 12 articles. The median impact factor of source publications used by Turkish cardiologists increased to 1.22 implying greater selectivity. As traditionally, the universities of Hacettepe and Ankara as well as the Hospitals of Turkey's Advanced Specialty and Koşuyolu led this year in publications generating in aggregate almost two-fifths of the total research in the field.
