The hemostatic fat power: an effective, cheap and biocompatible method to achieve hemostasis in cardiac surgery.

Postoperative bleeding has proved to increases morbidity, mortality and has an important impact in socioeconomic cost. It causes hemodynamic instability, increases blood loss and multiply number of transfusions required. Especially in vascular or aortic surgery, postoperative bleeding it can become a life threatening complication due to anticoagulant or antiaggregation preoperative status and postoperative coagulation dysfunction after high heparinization. Herein we describe the case of a patient submitted to an aortic valve rand ascending aorta replacement. We expose a simple but effective method to achieve hemostasis particularly designed to aortic surgery and the use of Dacron grafts. No residual adherences or contraindications exist and it can be potentially applied to any kind of surgical process. This method represents a cheap, biocompatible and highly effective strategy to accomplish complete hemostasis avoiding the use of extra sutures, synthetic or allogeneic and expensive hemostats or sealants agents.
