Association between Depression and Anxiety Scores and Inflammation in Patients with Isolated Coronary Artery Ectasia

OBJECTIVE
Depression and anxiety disorders frequently coexist with obstructive coronary artery disease. Coronary artery ectasia (CAE) is an atypical form of coronary artery disease of which aetiology was not clearly defined. In this study, we aimed to assess the association between anxiety/depression status and CAE.
Materials and
METHODS
CAE group (n=41, age=58.9±9.0) and a control group (n=42, age= 58.0±9.6) were compared. Anxiety and depression status of patients were assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) questionnaire.

RESULTS
Age, sex, ejection fraction, and cardiovascular risk factors were similar in both groups. Serum C-reactive protein (CRP), uric acid and leukocyte count were significantly higher in CAE group (p < 0.05). The HADS-anxiety score was higher in CAE group, albeit statistical non-significance (p=0.23). HADS-depression score and total HADS score were significantly higher in CAE group (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001). Total HADS score and HADS-depression score were correlated with serum CRP levels (r = 0.489, p < 0.001 and r = 0.543, p < 0.001; respectively) whereas the anxiety score was not correlated with CRP (r = 0.85, p = 0.23).

CONCLUSION
Depression score, CRP and uric acid levels were higher in patients with isolated CAE compared to patients with the normal coronaries. However, anxiety score was not related with CAE. There was a relationship between depression score and CRP, an inflammatory marker.
